For me, the transition from OWSI to MSDT was more than just the next step in my career—it was an intense period of personal and professional growth.
Getting started as an OWSI
After successfully completing my IE and earning my PADI OWSI certification, I was full of motivation. At the same time, I quickly realized what this role really entails. Suddenly, the full responsibility falls on you:
• Student safety
• Compliance with standards
• Organization and Procedure
• Time management
• Communication – above and below water
The first courses were exciting, but also challenging. Explaining theory is one thing. Guiding divers through real-world challenges is something entirely different. During this phase, I learned above all how crucial structure, clear briefings, and a calm demeanor are. If you stay calm, your group will stay calm too.
The Decision to Pursue the MSDT
It became clear to me fairly quickly that I wanted to broaden my professional expertise. That’s why becoming a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) was a conscious decision. Not for the title, but for the experience.
The specialty courses have changed my perspective. While the Open Water course is highly structured, the specialty courses require a much greater degree of individuality.
• Deep Diver means taking responsibility at the border.
• Navigation requires precision and patience.
• Nitrox combines theory with a real understanding of risk.
• Rescue sharpens your eye for details that others overlook.
Each of these training programs has not only helped my students grow—but me as well.
The biggest difference wasn't the number of certifications. It was the development behind them.
Sovereignty
With each specialty, you become more accustomed to the routine. You can assess situations more quickly, spot common mistakes early on, and nip potential problems in the bud. Your decisions become clearer—and more composed.
Didactic strength
Content is no longer simply presented; instead, it is tailored specifically to the participants’ level of experience, nervousness, and motivation. This is precisely where true learning success lies.
Heightened security awareness
This is particularly evident in the fields of deep diving and rescue diving: most critical situations do not arise suddenly—they give warning signs. The key is to recognize these signs and interpret them correctly.
Personal Development
This journey has not only shaped me professionally but has also changed my outlook. Reflection has become an integral part of my life:
What went well?
Where is there room for improvement?
How do you lead a group in a clear, confident, and relaxed manner?
Today, I teach in a calmer, more structured way and with much greater foresight than I did at the start of my career as an instructor.
And that, to me, is the true value of the MSDT—not the certification itself, but the experience behind it.
